Seeking glory at the RoboCup 2024, VDL Robot Sports fielded a team of football-playing autonomous mobile robots. Needing a platform that was both mechanically rugged and able to run complex AI algorithms with minimal latency, they chose the BOXER-8651AI as the engine of the team.

Featuring the NVIDIA® Jetson Orin NX, the BOXER-8651AI provided was on target, with the integrated NVIDIA Ampere GPU. Moreover, the system supported the NVIDIA JetPack™ software development kit, allowing the engineers at VDL Robot Sports to optimize the performance of their AI models.

Box-to-Box Midfielder: Communication Interfaces

The autonomous robot players relied on a range of interfaces such as USB and Ethernet ports to obtain visual data and communicate with other MCUs controlling the robot’s sensors and actuators, respectively. The BOXER-8651AI’s Wi-Fi expansion support also allowed for communication between the robots and the coaches on the sidelines.
